VERTICAL LIFT DOORS CASE STUDY

Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (Madison, WI)

The Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, designed their unique new building to encourage human health, exploration and discovery. Door Engineering and Manufacturing designed the modern, circular conference/meeting room walls located in the lobby of the building. When this 70’ diameter, sound proof conference room was not in use, the wall panels rose into the ceiling allowing for a clear view throughout the building.

Designers created four, 35’ width by 9’4” high, curved vertical lift doors. This custom application utilized dual operators with encoders and specialized ball screws to provide the force to the lift cables. Plates were embedded into ceilings and columns to attach the operators and door guides. Rolled tubes frames and distinctive pick points were chosen to maximize headroom when the doors were retracted into the ceiling as well as minimize the loads on the door guides.
