The one-of-a-kind outdoor Starlight Theatre, located on the Rock Valley College campus, was in need of a 60’ wide by 30’ high stage door. Door Engineering and Manufacturing designed a bi-parting, bottom rolling stage door that complimented the theatre’s unique features.
The performers’ safety was the first concern when designing this project. The sliding door required bottom floor tracks which could create a tripping hazard. Safety foam filler was inserted into the slotted track which allowed the wheels to travel over the track, as well as seal the track during a performance. Electric safety edges were also used to prevent the doors from colliding with performers and props while operating.
Polycarbonate interior/exterior sheeting covered the door frames. Designers created the look of vertical panels with selective door frame and support steel spacing. The door operator assemblies were stealthily designed to avoid distraction from the doors aesthetic qualities. The operators were also synchronized allowing both doors to operate simultaneously.
